Balance or Harmony?

There is frequent talk these days about work-life balance. It makes sense as there is a lot to juggle both at home and at work. And, we ask you, what is balance exactly?

Balance indicates that there is equal influence on all sides, thus keeping us constantly in an even flow. While that sounds wonderful and even possibly achievable, ask yourself the hard question: When and for how long has your life been in perfect balance? What is your honest answer?

If you have figured out how to achieve and maintain balance, we say GOOD FOR YOU--and please share your secrets with the rest of us! For most, including both of us, it’s a constant work in progress. So, instead of striving for balance, how about focusing on harmony instead?

Harmony is when all aspects collectively work well enough together. Simultaneously, some areas are louder or quieter, heavier or lighter; some need more attention and some less; some are fun or interesting, some are a burden or boring. You get the gist. And, when your goal is achieving harmony, which may look and feel different every day, your outlook and energy can shift in ways that can serve you in healthier ways.

Balance and harmony are both intentional states—what’s different is where and how you focus your thoughts and energy. You can be out of balance and in harmony concurrently without feeling or being out of control. The key is knowing where you need time and attention and funneling enough of it there in the moment or in anticipation of what is to come in order to maintain your equilibrium. So, instead of balance, work toward harmony, letting the sounds of your life ebb and flow to achieve a reasonable tune. In the end, you’ll be swaying more confidently and contentedly to the music being played.
